Letër e Hapur për Ministrin e Kulturës në Shqipëri

E nderuar zj. Margariti,
Unë them shtirje sepse është pikërisht kjo.

Open Letter to the Albanian Minister of Culture

Dear Ms. Margariti,
The Ministry of Culture persists on sending ‘students’ over to our property under the pretense of a study by architectural students. I say pretense because that’s exactly what it is.
I had a conversation yesterday, April 29, with the Director of the Culture Ministry in Shkodra, Ms. Podgorica, where I was asked to allow these students on the property so that they could analyze, measure and photograph the house for their ‘design’ project. When I inquired as to who these students worked for she said they were were sub-contracted. I asked again, who they worked for, who was the design being submitted to and it was finally admitted that the ‘project’ would be submitted to the Ministry of Culture. What a surprise!
As a result, I unequivocally informed her that their presence on the property was not permitted in order to facilitate the development of a project to satisfy the government’s needs. This is a privately held property.
However, they arrived regardless of my response to her and access to the property was granted to the group by the sole non-blood relative who is a co-owner but does not maintain a permanent residence here.
I started a dialogue with the leader of the group, who was an employee of the Ministry of Culture. I asked whether he or they possessed knowledge regarding the identity of the property’s original owners. Who built it? What is the historical context of the residence and family? I received nothing but a vacant stare in response. The Albanian youth continue to be unaware of our true identity.
The subject of Lek Dukagjini and its descendants are not included in the school curriculums. No information is taught concerning Mirdita and its history. With respect to the historical importance of the Markagjonis in Shkoder and Mirdita, they are entirely ignorant. Nevertheless, they are enthusiastic about accessing this site with the intention of sketching and photographing, all the while professing to have been at the “Kulla” for their personal Instagram photo opportunities and to present the Ministry with a ‘project’ that is unrelated to the historical importance of this residence. To them this house is just a picture-pretty location and a way to make headway in the Ministry by providing a ‘project’ they would find interesting and alluring for their tourism initiatives.
The Markagjoni family rejects any government claim that the house in Shkoder is a ‘cultural monument’, as the communist dictator who confiscated the property made that proclamation. An assertion given by the communist dictator Enver Hoxha, who is acknowledged by the current government as the mastermind behind the execution of as much as 10 percent of the Albanian populace throughout his regime.
A dictator who ordered the murder, imprisonment, torture and hard labor for the members of the Markagjoni family after being evicted from this Kulla and the property cunfiscated by him.
In response to the government’s frequent requests to use or look at the house under the pretext of it being a ‘cultural monument’, this is my reply:
The Albanian government needs to publicly apologize to ALL the persecuted families for crimes committed against them during the regime.
Restitution of ALL our properties confiscated in these locations: Qafe Molle, Orosh, Lac VauDejes, Balldren, Nderfushe, Zadrime, Kallmet, Kakarriq, Barbulloje and Hajmel.
Compensation to the families who suffered for over 45 years in concentration and labor camps under orders of the regime.
Compensation which, in over 30 years of democracy, has yet to be given to ANYONE for their suffering.
Our property will continue to be off-limits to government intrusions until the aforementioned items are acknowledged, compensation is administered, and lands are returned in accordance with the constitutional right of all Albanians as guaranteed in Article 41 of the Constitution of Albania.

Successful Promotions for “Tower of Resistance Markagjoni Family an Albanian Dynasty” and “Kapidan Mark Gjon Marku, Commander in Chief of the National Armed Forces”

We had a very successful two-day book promotion.
On Thursday, April 4 it was held in Shkoder at the Jezuit Dioces and on Friday, April 5 at the Cultural Building in Rreshen, Mirdita.
The two books promoted were my very own “Tower of Resistance, Markagjoni Family, An Albanian Dynasty” and “Kapidan Mark Gjon Marku, Commander of the National Resistance Forces” by a group of authors in the care of Mr.sc. Nue Oroshi.
I would like to express my gratitude to Mr. Nue Oroshi for his unwavering commitment and tenacity in advancing knowledge about Albania, including its arduous battles against Ottoman independence over the course of five hundred years and, more recently, a repressive communist regime that ruled for fifty years. The nation continues to grapple with the lingering effects of this abhorrent regime, and Nue is ceaselessly engaged in efforts to educate the world about its enduring impact.
Additionally, I would like to extend my gratitude to Mr. Tome Mrijaj along with Nue Oroshi for being steadfast pillars of truth regarding the annals of the Dera e Gjomarkut. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude and reverence to both gentlemen for their unwavering loyalty and steadfastness towards my family.
All those who contributed to the success of these two events are greatly appreciated: Mr.sc. Nue Oroshi, Mrs. Kristina Oroshi, Kristina Oroshi, Artan Lleshi, Dr.sc. Besim Morina, Atty. Ndre Molla, Ms.sc. Emrie Krosi, Ms. Ermonda Foniqi and Ms. Arbresha Berisha. A special thank you to Chris Tushaj for providing his excellent videography service.

History of the Kulla of Gjon Marka Gjonit

The “Kulla Markagjoni” was constructed during the mid-1800s by Bibё Doda (1820-1868), the Kapidan of Mirdita. The residence, measuring 819 square meters, was built in close proximity to the Jesuit Seminary, situated directly opposite on the street, in Shkodra. The current dimensions of the building and its surrounding gardens amount to a total area of 2,650 square meters. Nevertheless, the property was initially twice as large. In 1944, at the onset of communism, the regime seized the property and subsequently constructed buildings at the back of the house, resulting in the loss of a significant portion of the property.
Born in Orosh, Mirdita, in 1860, Prengё Bibё Doda is the only son of Bibё Doda. Prengё and his sister Dava were brought up in Shkodra, where his father Bibё Doda had relocated. The environment encircling Prengё was a fusion of the traditions and culture of the Mirdita highlands and the education and culture of the city of Shkodra. Bibё Doda was assassinated in Shkodra in 1868 by poisoning; he was succeeded by his wife Margjela, his son Prengё Bibё Doda, and his daughter Dava. The Turkish government expeditiously extradited the young boy Prengё to Istanbul, leaving behind his sister and mother. His return did not occur until 1876. Following his involvement in the Albanian League of Prizren in 1878, he was once more exiled to Istanbul. He was not released until 1908.
Margjela, Prengё’s mother, embodied the qualities of leadership, intelligence, competence, and determination, which were indicative of her spouse. Despite not being formally involved in self-government, she exerted considerable sway over Mirdita’s decision-making processes via her son and the leaders in Mirdita. Following her son’s exile, Margjela, her daughter Dava, and her adopted daugther Marta continued to reside in the “Kulla” of Shkodra. She guarded her son’s position and, by extension, the legacy of Bibё Doda since her son’s exile in 1878, doing so with the grace and dignity befitting a princess.
Shkodra was struck by a catastrophic earthquake in 1905, which not only damaged the residence but also claimed the life of Prengё’s sister Dava. Prengё Bibe Doda, upon his return from exile in Turkey in 1908, commissioned the renowned architect Kolё Idromeno to renovate the residence and add a five-story structure to its south side, in response to the extensive damage caused by the earthquake. The tower was completed around 1910.
In 1913, two significant events transpired. Margjela Bibё Doda passed away and was interred in Shkodra; in September of that year, Prengё Bibё Doda wed Lucja Gjinaj. A new beginning for the Kulla. Sadly, Prengё Bibё Doda was assassinated in an ambush in Durrёs on March 22, 1919, without leaving any descendants behind. Following this, his wife Lucja remained in the residence for a period of time.
In accordance with the prevailing highland’s law of the time, the Kanun of Lek Dukagjini, the absence of male descendants meant that Prengё’s cousin Kapidan Marka Gjoni (1860-1925), the son of Gjon Marka Lleshi, was the subsequent in line of succession. This resulted in Kapidan Marka Gjoni inheriting the Kulla in Shkodra, in addition to other properties. Usufruct rights were granted to Lucja Bibё Doda until a future date determined by the heir apparent of Marka Gjoni, his son Kapidan Gjon Marka Gjoni.
Subsequent to Kapidan Marka Gjoni’s death in 1925, the property was entirely inherited by his son, Kapidan Gjon Marka Gjoni. A mutual financial agreement was reached between Kapidan Gjon Marka Gjoni and Lucja Bibё Doda a few years later, allowing her to vacate the premises and establish residence in an alternative location.
Kapidan Gjon and his family were able to eventually inhabit the house they had rightfully inherited. Aside from its residents, the house was a significant attraction in Shkodra during its heyday due to its size and elaborate architecture. In addition to receiving government officials and community members, it was frequently visited by a multitude of dignitaries from around the globe. Kapidan Gjon Marka Gjoni subsequently established his residence in Shkodra, where his younger children gained their education. The establishment of the “Independent National Group” of Shkodra in March 1944 by his son Kapidan Mark Gjon Marku, which served as the precursor to the anti-communist resistance movement, was directed and managed from the Kulla.
The dwelling comprised two stories of habitable area. The kitchen was situated on the ground floor, providing stair access to the first floor that housed the remaining spaces. The library, which was the most essential component of the dwelling, is located in close proximity to the tower on the south side of the residence. This location was visited by every dignitary and guest who had traveled to Shkodra to pay their respects to the Kapidans. During that period, the room was decorated with Persian rugs and antiquities, in addition to a wood-carved ceiling, elaborate wall panels, and a decorative bookcase. There are a total of twenty-five rooms in the residence. Located on the southern side of the house, the five-story tower was built, offering four stories of habitable space. A Venetian well sits on the north side of the house.
The communist regime seized the residence in 1944, subsequently destroying and pilfering every piece of furniture and accessory. The home was turned into the headquarters for State Security, later becoming government offices and, ultimately, a girls’ school. During these periods of transition, the residence was completely demolished; the walls were removed, the windows were barred, and a communist star was attached to the roof pediment above the two-headed eagle of the Albanian flag. As the end of communism drew near, the communists inflicted further destruction on our home out of contempt for our family. In August 1991, after 46 years of continuous suffering and the fall of communism, our family at last returned to the ancestral residence.
The property was officially designated a Category I Cultural Monument during the communist regime that was in power in 1977. When the property was finally legally “returned” in 1994 to its rightful owners, subsequent to the downfall of a regime that unlawfully seized it and bestowed a status upon it during that regime, it should have been reinstated in its original condition and without any limitations. The classification of Status I was carried out within a structure that sought to eliminate all property and property rights; that regime has since been overthrown, and any legislation that violated property rights and was enacted during its tenure ought to be revoked as well.
The restitution of our property was not subject to any deed restrictions, such as being restricted by the Cultural Monument I status. Albania has acknowledged its culpability by returning a private property which had been confiscated, forcibly seized, sequestered, and subsequently pilfered during the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha. However, the laws enforced by the Ministry of Culture, which remain rooted in policies instituted during the communist era, persist in promoting confiscatory methods that are intrinsically and perpetually unlawful and unjust.
Notwithstanding its undeniable cultural significance, the home did not receive government funding for design, construction, or any assistance from government architects or personnel. It was financed through personal funds acquired by an individual, as opposed to funds provided by the government.
The status of Cultural Monument is a mere pretense. If the government sincerely asserts that this property represents a valuable asset for Albania and a cultural treasure, then the ignorance exhibited by the majority of adults and children concerning the historical lineage of Gjon Marka Gjoni is puzzling. Why is the history of the Gjon Marku dynasty and its impact on Albanian history not included in the national curriculum by the government? Why is there no current instruction in the history classes pertaining to the “Kanun of Lek Dukagjini”, the laws of the highlands, and its enduring impact on Albanian culture? Despite this, they persist in designating historical dwellings like the Kulla as cultural landmarks with the intention of sustaining their tourism endeavors, without genuinely acknowledging that the house’s and its owners’ heritage constitutes the pinnacle of Albanian history.
Due to this, the family does not recognize the property’s status, which was established during the communist regime that unlawfully appropriated it; to do so would be an affront to every family member who was killed and suffered as a result of the regime’s atrocities. We neither acknowledge nor recognize any institution or action that was instituted during the communist era. The manner in which government officials and the media are promoting the status as an emblem of immense prestige is an absolute fabrication and a ruse to obscure the government’s infamous ultimate land grab.
It must be at the discretion of the proprietors, and not the Ministry of Culture or government, to determine whether they would like their property to be included in the National Register. In republican or democratic administrations, the standing authority of the Ministry of Culture to retain and/or declare something cultural property without the owner’s consent violates the concept of property rights. Despite the fact that the status was granted during the period when the property was “not owned by the rightful owners,” any statutes imposed on it should be nullified upon the property’s lawful return to them.
Today, the home legally belongs to Kapidan Gjon Marka Gjoni’s surviving heirs, the children of his three sons: Mark, Ndue, and Nikollё.
Kulla e Rezistencës 7 shekullore e Dinastisë shqiptare të Kapidanëve të Mirditës
31 Korrik, 2023

TOWER OF RESISTANCE ~ TORRE DELLA RESISTENZA by BIANCA MARIA GJOMARKAJ
21 June, 2023

A must-read for any Albanian thirsting for knowledge of Mirdita and the Gjomarku Dynasty.
The book features more than 280 photographs which are very representative of the Markagjoni history from the early XX century up until the present. It deserved to be told.
A unique work, detailed and very important for all historians, and seekers of the truth about the family of the Kapidan of Mirdita, Gjon Marka Gjoni, and their suffering under the communist regime in Albania between 1944-1991.

It degrades, violates, and tarnishes everything the Albanians possess, including our feelings, name, property, moral virtues, family, honor, and faith, and it refuses to recognize the great God.
Kapidan Mark Gjon Marku (on communism~sul comunismo)

They no longer require our services, but the people will never forget the calvary endured by Albania’s political persecuted during the communist dictatorship.

GJON MARKA GJONI – KAPIDAN’I MIRDITES
DERA E GJOMARKUT ~ GJOMARKAJ PORTE

Through the ages one just has to ask the question: Which family gave their lives protecting the religious freedom that Mirdita and most of the North of Albania enjoys today? How many men fought wars, generation after generation, protecting the freedom of their homeland, religion and customs? Only one name stands out, that of the “Dera e Gjomarkut” the “Gjomarkaj Porte”.
Through the centuries their bravery, nationalism, pride and belief in Catholicism is undeniable. The Dera e Gjomarkut led in every war; for freedom, religion and homeland. So why is it that historians, intellectuals, journalists, commentators, politicians et al are so afraid to speak about it? Why is it that the history of this very important family is denied in Albanian history books? Not taught in Albanian schools? What are they so afraid of? Why so much organized hostility against this Porte and family?
The Kanun of Lek Dukagjini has been at the forefront of Albanian history and when the need arose it was applied judiciously by the Kapidan of Mirdita. We exhalt and rightly so, other nationalists in the media and history books, the likes of Sami Frasheri, Pashko Vaso, Isa Buletini, but when it comes to the Gjomarkaj Porte there is nothing. A void. Blank pages. What are we teaching our children, our youth about the North? About the heroism shown through the centuries by members of this Porte? Why was the North mostly Catholic and why has it remained so after 500 years?
Through the centuries and up until the present the Gjomarkj Porte was decimated, they fought and lost, but their spirit never died. They were resurrected over and over again and maintained their dignity, their nobility, their faith and deep patriotism. For centuries the Kanun of Leke Dukagjini was at the forefront of the northern provinces and when it was needed it was administered by this Porte with fairness and justly. This Porte, to whom so many brave men belong: Gjon Marku, Llesh i Zi, Bibe Dode, Preng Bibe Dode, Prenge Lleshi, Lesh Gjoni, Ndue Gjoni, Dode Lleshi, Marka Gjoni, Gjon Marka Gjoni, Ndue Gjon Marku, Llesh Gjon Marku, Dede Gjon Marku, Nikoll Gjon Marku and last but not least the flag bearer of Mirdita, the hero who led Mirdita in its fight against communism with all his might and ultimate sacrifice, his life: Kapidan Mark Gjon Marku.
They and others belonging to this Porte may not be written about by Albanian contemporary writers or discussed by analysts, but they are not forgotten by the people of Mirdita. This Porte, who gave so much and yet asked so little in return but to be free, to practice their religion and to let Mirdita grow and prosper in a democratic society, has been systematically denied their rightful and just place in Albanian history.
Shame on the so called historians and education administrators who keep denying Mirdita and the Dera e Gjomarkut their just history, thereby denying their children, the future of Albania, an undeniable truth; that the Dera e Gjomarkut has played a role in our history as no other family ever has or will again. And it is thanks to this Porte, this Dera, that the North has remained a Catholic heaven and that its customs and traditions have been left untouched.
